Hyatt Carmel Highlands Undergoing Major Renovation Hotel Turns 100 in 2017

Frequently asked Questions on Renovation Renovation to be Completed July 2016

Salinas, CA, May 30, 2016 - The Highlands Inn was built in 1916 by Frank Work and sold to J. Frank Devendorf, one of the co-founders of the city of Camel-by-the-Sea, who opened it in 1917. Devendorf envisioned an inn "that combined the rustic qualities of its setting, yet offered travelers all the luxury that the progress of the new century could offer," according to a story in The Monterey Peninsula Herald archives. Devendorf developed the Carmel Highlands as a residential community with a keen appreciation of its unique setting. Devendorf and his longtime foreman, Frank DeAmaral, planted pine trees and laid out the roads and building sites to be in harmony with the natural surroundings.

As early as 1906, the San Francisco Call newspaper devoted a full page to the "artists, poets and writers" of Carmel-by-the-Sea and Carmel Highlands.

Over the years, the Highlands Inn and the Carmel Highlands area became a haven for many artists and writers, including authors Robinson Jeffers, George Sterling, Jack London, Harry Leon Wilson and Mary Austin; journalist Jimmy Hopper; photographers Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, marine painter William Ritschel and Pulitzer Prize-winner playwright and novelist Martin Flavin.

Building on that tradition, the Carmel Highlands has continued to host notable celebrities, including Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, Robert Redford, Tina Turner, Michael J. Fox, John Denver, Tony Bennett and John Travolta. The Highlands Inn has also played host to nobility, including the Crown Prince of Japan and the Crown Prince of Jordan.

 Renovation Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the renovations?

The renowned Hyatt Carmel Highlands is completing one of the most exciting renovations in its 99-year history. The hotel’s award-winning restaurant, Pacific’s Edge, along with the guestrooms, bar, hotel entrance and lobby area are undergoing a series of upscale enhancements inspired by the property’s refined charm and classic seaside setting.

Renovations will include the merger of Pacific’s Edge with the hotel’s excellent casual bistro, California Market, into a new restaurant — California Market at Pacific’s Edge.

When will the renovations be completed?

The renovations are currently being completed in phases to accommodate guests. We will continue to keep guests informed as the phases are completed.

What is the design inspiration?

The design concept for the renovation is based on the rich history of the property.

Drawing from the artist colonies that were the heart of the artistic and literary landscape that Carmel is known for, the new restaurant and bar area will reflect a celebration of those elements and casts a nod to the rugged local coastline. As guests arrive, sculptural elements of flying coastal birds will greet them, framing a breathtaking view of the Big Sur coast. Seating styles are a comfortable collection of chairs featuring tweed fabric and leather “elbow” patches reminiscent of a country sports jacket.

What was the idea behind the renovations?

We are thrilled to offer our patrons these improvements. This luxurious refresh will offer some new design elements, while maintaining the unique and authentic feel that has made visiting this property such a memorable experience for so many during the last century.

What will the transformation of Pacific’s Edge entail?

The hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Pacific’s Edge, will be merged with the hotel’s casual bistro, California Market, into one venue, California Market at Pacific’s Edge. The new three-meal restaurant will be on the upper level, where Pacific's Edge was located and feature an expanded 40-seat, 1,200-square-foot heated outdoor dining deck with awe-inspiring views of the rugged coastline. The addition of the glass-railed deck will allow capacity at the restaurant to increase by about one-third, to 140 diners and allow for unobstructed views.

New seating arrangements will include a large communal table made of a fallen Monterey cypress trunk and high-top tables in select areas to allow everyone a great view of the Pacific Ocean. The space feels tailored yet comfortable for that casual breakfast or lunch, as well as a relaxing celebratory dinner overlooking a spectacular sunset.

What other renovations are taking place?

In addition to the restaurant upgrades, renovations will be completed in the front entrance, guestrooms, bar and lobby area.

How are guest rooms being renovated?

Guests will enjoy new furnishings, décor, color schemes, new heating and the addition of air conditioning across the hotel’s 48 rooms inclusive of its 10 suites. The guestrooms’ refreshed look will draw upon the hotel’s upscale coastal ambience.

How will the bar area be upgraded?

The existing bar, Sunset Lounge, will be reconfigured to take greater advantage of the spectacular views of the Pacific coastline. The design theme for the lounge is derived from elements consistent with the area’s historic artist colonies.

Timber frames and metal strappings that were once used to hold back the coastal cliff sides are being represented in the design elements. Artisanal glass blown pendant lights are above the bar. Sleek marble countertops create a perfect nook to share crafted artisanal cocktails, award-winning wines and great conversation.

What renovations are taking place in the lobby?

New furnishings and living room style components will be added to the hotel’s lobby area, which will be outfitted to accommodate private parties of more than 100 guests.

What is the name of the design firm?

Clear on Black is an interior architectural design firm for upscale and luxury hotels and resorts. The firm has designed several of the exclusive properties that form part of the Hyatt Vacation Ownership portfolio.

Will there be any changes to the cuisine?

In addition to the renovations, a series of exciting new dining options by Executive Chef Chad Minton will be unveiled. Chef Minton and his executive sous chef Alvaro Dalmau have devised a new menu that features the most popular selections from both restaurants along with several new selections

Will California Market close?

California Market will continue to operate either in its current location or someone else onsite once the new restaurant is completed.

Will the new venue be considered fine dining?

There will be some fine dining components; however, the new venue will also feature other elements to appeal to a broader audience.

Is there a philosophy behind the new menu?

The menu embraces the philosophy of conscious cuisine, which we are committed to providing our guests every day. This commitment includes:

• Utilizing meats and poultry that are only naturally farmed and certified organic
• Utilizing only the finest, locally sourced meats, fish and produce.
• Forming partnerships with local foragers and purchasing organic produce primarily within a 100-mile radius of the property
• Purchasing sustainable seafood in compliance with the Monterrey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch

What are some of the new menu items?

Sample menu items at California Market at Pacific’s Edge include a cast iron skillet egg scramble featuring chorizo, tomato, potato, cilantro and grilled bread and organic fried eggs, all natural, hickory-smoked maple bacon, Monterey jack cheese on toasted brioche bun, for breakfast.

Lunch includes such delectable choices as Baja fish tacos featuring fresh locally caught fish topped with shaved cabbage and chipotle aioli; chicken sofrito empanadas with Santa Barbara green olives, capers and smoked paprika aioli; and a Petaluma fried chicken sandwich with spicy pickles and black pepper honey on a toasted brioche bun.

For dinner, start with an appetizer of heirloom tomatoes, buratta mozzarella, opal basil blossoms and sherry vinegar, followed by signature entrees such as merlot-glazed short ribs with roasted baby heirloom carrots, kale and buttermilk potato puree and hook and line-caught sea bass with almond gazpacho, grapes, basil oil, and sun choke chips.

Even the bar menu will be reinvigorated with such items as short rib tacos, buttermilk-dipped and fried calamari, Gilroy garlic fries and a classic double-patty with American cheese PCH Burger.

The 50-page wine list at Pacific's Edge has also been updated, with more emphasis on the many excellent wines from Monterey County.

The Clement Palo Alto, Opened in March 2016

Hotel Offers A 6-Star Experience in the Heart of Silicon Valley with Unparalleled Personal Service in All-Inclusive Luxury

Palo Alto, CA, May 26, 2016- The Clement Palo Alto opened its doors March 2016. It is one of the most innovative, personalized and unique luxury hotels in the country.

With 23 spacious and richly appointed one-bedroom suites, The Clement Palo Alto sets a new standard for personalized luxury accommodations in a contemporary residential-style atmosphere.

While unparalleled service is key to any great luxury hotel, The Clement Palo Alto takes its impeccable service to another level with an all-inclusive concept, including personalized concierge services, breakfast, lunch and dinner in an on-premise location of the guest's choice. All wine, beer and cocktails, in-room mini-refrigerator (stocked with the guest's favorites), and fully-stocked Guest Pantry available around the clock, are just a few of the amenities included in this all-inclusive experience.

In fact, The Clement Palo Alto is more than all-inclusive, it is all-exclusive, catering exclusively to the guest's personal tastes and desires.

No detail has been overlooked at The Clement Hotel, from the guest's favorite sparkling water and snacks in the mini-fridge to the plush Stearns & Foster European pillow top California King beds with luxurious Frette bed linens.

"The inspiration for this hotel came about when my wife and I took a getaway trip to the island of Bali," says Clement Chen III, president of Pacific Hotel Management, LLC, creators of The Clement Hotel, Palo Alto. "We stayed at a small hotel there that left a deep impression on us. Everybody at the hotel - even the gardening staff -knew our names, and everyone there was so warm and personable. And, since all of the staff knew who we were, we never had to sign a check for anything. We didn't feel like we were customers at a hotel - we were able to just relax and enjoy our stay, like being at home, only better!"

That memorable hotel stay convinced Mr. Chen that the same experience would be well-received in the U.S., and that has been the guiding vision for The Clement Hotel.

"I want each guest to feel like a guest, not a customer," says Chen. "I loved the feeling of not having to sign a check or worry about tipping every time I turned around. That is why we have all-inclusive pricing. We want our guests to feel like they are house guests at a great residence with a terrific service staff."

The moment guests arrive at the front door, they will step into an oasis of sophistication, service and comfort. Instead of the typical lobby and registration desk of most hotels, guests at The Clement Palo Alto will be greeted by their own Personal Concierge.

This Personal Concierge will have an iPad with all the pertinent information about the guests, including their wants and needs, and take them directly to their rooms. The Personal Concierge will take care of the guests for the duration of their stay and take care of all their personal needs.

During their stay, guests can have breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared in The Kitchen, the hotel's open kitchen, with an executive chef presiding over the menu tailored to their tastes and requirements. Guests can dine in The Dining Room, the outdoor Dining Terrace, the privacy of their guest suite, or in a private cabana on the private roof-top pool deck overlooking the picturesque Stanford University campus.

Guests also have access to the beautifully appointed communal guest kitchen, which is similar to a high-end residential kitchen, with access to a fully stocked guest pantry that is available around the clock.

The 650-square-foot, one-bedroom suites offer modern and sophisticated comfort reflecting the Northern California lifestyle. Each suite provides an intuitive layout with an array of carefully curated amenities to enhance the guest's stay. State-of-the-art technology is combined with comfort of the highest quality, such as sumptuous Frette linens, 65-inch Samsung Smart TVs, Nespresso Vertuoline coffee machines, and fully stocked in-room refrigerators.

Spacious stone-lined bathrooms include a soaking tub and a separate glass-enclosed shower, lighted makeup mirrors at a dry vanity area, and a TV behind the mirrors, just a few of the features that will delight their senses.

Other luxurious touches include remote-controlled motorized draperies, a desk fully stocked with office supplies and a connectivity panel for Internet and charging, robe options and slippers of the guest's choice in the spacious closets.

The common areas of the hotel feature the elegant Living Room, which is accented with a stone fireplace and is the perfect location to relax with a favorite cocktail or glass of wine. Or they can enjoy the firepit on the outdoor Dining Terrace or at the roof-top deck with a swimming pool, whirlpool and private cabanas.

In addition, there is a fully equipped exercise room on the second floor of the hotel available to guests 24 hours.

The interior design of The Clement Palo Alto was created by Stanford Hughes of the renowned, award-winning San Francisco hotel design firm Brayton Hughes Design Studios.

Hughes says his design takes its inspiration from the hotel's architecture, which he describes as "an abstraction of traditional Manor House."

"The decor is contemporary, elegant and comfortable. It offers a warm, alluring ambiance in an intimate residential scale," says Hughes, whose firm's award-winning designs include Four Seasons Hotel Chicago and The Ritz-Carlton Highlands, Lake Tahoe. "The interior design offers a perfect blend of contemporary and classic elements. The palette of warm neutral colors and natural materials creates a soothing, cozy and relaxing environment. It is elegant and minimal, yet highly livable.
The Clement Palo Alto is more than a hotel, it is a home away from home."

The Clement Palo Alto's all-inclusive services and amenities include:
• All-inclusive breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks

Country Radio,” along with the rest of the tracks off of Blood Like Wine, were recorded in the famous Castle Recording Studios in Nashville, TN with well-known country producer Jeff Huskins (Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Clint Black, Shania Twain). With her stirring, soulful vocals, Angie discusses a sparking infatuation with a prospective lover. Bruyere’s rasp and rawness is what shines through this upbeat, edgy Americana single.

In her youth, Angie Bruyere began songwriting when she started creating music out of her poetry. Known as a dynamic performer, Angie has played in some of Southern California’s premier venues such as Pappy and Harriet’s, Whisky a Go Go, The Troubadour, The Roxy and The Mint. In addition, Bruyere has toured across the United States, through Italy and the rest of Europe. Angie looks forward to continue her touring in support of her Blood Like Wine EP.

The six-song release, Blood Like Wine, will be followed by an additional EP, which includes the second half of Angie’s Nashville recordings and will be released later this year.

In Nashville, Bruyere was fortunate to work with renowned musicians such as; Troy Lancaster (Loretta Lynn, Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift), Aubrie Haynie (Blake Shelton, Hank Williams Jr., Merle Haggard), Scott Sanders (Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift, Alan Jackson), John Willis (Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, Kenny Rogers), Kevin “Swine” Grant (Willie Nelson, Linda Rondstat, Toby Keith), Fred Eltringham (Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow), Evan Hutchings, Dave Doran and mastered by legendary and Grammy Winning, Bob Ludwig (Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix).

In 2014, Angie released West of the Night, which was followed by a Fender sponsorship that featured Angie as Fender’s artist of the month. Along with, two fender sessions of her “Goodbyes” and “Mason Jar” singles.

“Bruyere’s sultry voice stood out, as she possesses a distinctive purr that is both sweet and dangerous at the same time.”-Fender

Gartner Selects Netswitch as Representative of New Breed of Cyber-Security Managed Detection and Response Vendors

The Gartner Group has just issued a new market guide for Cyber-Security services describing what it is calling “Managed Detection and Response” and naming Netswitch Technology as a market representative provider in the space.

South San Francisco, CA, May 17, 2016 - The Gartner Group has just issued a new market guide for Cyber-Security services describing what it is calling “Managed Detection and Response” and naming Netswitch Technology as a market representative provider in the space.

The report, targeted to security leaders and available to Gartner subscribers was authored by senior Gartner security analysts, Toby Bussa, Craig Lawson and Kelly M. Kavanagh, identifies new service providers that are emerging to support organizations seeking to improve their threat detection and incident response capabilities.

“We are delighted that Gartner has included us in this category of market leaders along with Cisco, Raytheon and FireEye”, says Steve King, COO and Chief Security Officer of Netswitch. “Our unique SaaS offering is based on our Securli Advanced Threat Protection platform and our SecurliXF extended threat intelligence service. This service correlates disparate data feeds from a variety of sources both public and proprietary to provide predictive threat intelligence along with our monitoring, incident response and remediation capabilities. The result is actionable threat intelligence delivered on a 24x7 clock.”

As Marc van Zadelhoff, the head of IBM Security recently pointed out, “Even if the industry was able to fill the estimated 1.5 million open cyber security jobs by 2020, we’d still have a skills crisis in security.” Managed Detection and Response providers fill that critical security skills gap by providing expert detection and remediation service to deal with today’s increasingly complex threats. Private businesses and public companies will find it challenging to deal with these threats alone.

Netswitch’s business model allows them to manage the monitoring tools selected by the customer and through their three partner SOCs - two in the U.S. and one in Hong Kong - provide 24/7 monitoring, incident investigation, alerting and remediation services with a 15-minute response SLA. Netswitch is predominantly used by midsize organizations today, but is also targeting enterprises with its MDR service. The service is priced on the number of log sources and the security monitoring tools selected from the Netswitch technology portfolio.

Gartner points out that by 2020, 15% of midsize and enterprise organizations will be using services like MDR, up from less than 1% today. And, by 2020, 50% of worldwide MSSPs will offer MDR-type services.

Gartner recommends that IT security leaders should
1) Use MDR services to augment existing security monitoring capabilities to address gaps in advanced threat detection and incident response before investing in more security monitoring tools (e.g., security information and event management [SIEM], network, and host-threat detection), and associated staff and expertise.
2) Consider managed security service providers (MSSPs) that offer MDR-like services when device management and compliance use cases are required.
3) Look for MDR providers who can incorporate your existing security controls in the scope of their services to improve context and coverage.

Security leaders should use this research to understand the MDR services market and it’s fit for their security monitoring and incident response requirements.

Internationally renowned a cappella ensemble and activists, SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK, whose mission is empowerment, education and entertainment have announced they will proceed with their scheduled engagements in Goldsboro at the Paramount Theatre, May 13th, and High Point Theatre, May 14th, in North Carolina.

New York, NY, May 14, 2016 - Internationally renowned a cappella ensemble and activists, SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK, whose mission is empowerment, education and entertainment have announced they will proceed with their scheduled engagements in Goldsboro at the Paramount Theatre, May 13th, and High Point Theatre, May 14th, in North Carolina. They will protest in song to express their opposition to the passage of the HB2 anti-transgender (so-called "bathroom law") that has embroiled North Carolina in a national controversy.

In their official announcement, the group stated, "Sweet Honey in the Rock has always stood for justice, freedom, dignity, and basic human rights for all people, regardless of race, religion, age, ability, economic status, political affiliation, national origin, gender identity, or sexual orientation, and our diverse audiences reflect these principles. In 2010, we joined many other artists in the boycott against the unjust policy in Arizona (SB 1070) By declining to perform, however, we were constantly reminded by those in the struggle that they needed our voices for support. "

"Although we do not endorse the recent passing of the unjust HB2 anti-transgender law in North Carolina, we will honor our prior commitments (Goldsboro, May 13; High Point, May 14) to offer music which will uplift and inspire all those who believe it is imperative to stand together against injustice. We who believe in freedom cannot rest."

San Juan Bautista Design Firm Creates New Logo, Tagline for City of San Juan Bautista

Schipper Design, an international marketing and design firm located in San Juan Bautista, California, has created a new logo and branding tagline for the city.

San Juan Bautista, CA, May 11, 2016Schipper Design, an international marketing and design firm located in San Juan Bautista, California, has created a new logo and branding tagline for the city.

San Juan Bautista’s new logo and tagline honors its heritage and celebrates its future as an historic California city.

The new logo takes its cue from elements present in the architecture of Third Street as well as illustrations from the interior of the historic San Juan Bautista Mission, balancing historic tradition and heritage with 21st century imagination.

The process started in November 2015, when the San Juan Bautista Committee engaged Schipper Design to create a brand identity for the city, including a new logo and brand focus.

The first phase of the process began with a public survey, which resulted in 137 responses from residents and visitors alike. The results of the survey were tabulated and quotes were referenced in developing the new messaging for the city.

One typical response was: “An authentic and historic town, a hidden treasure, far from the maddening crowd, frozen in time, takes you back to the good old days where the pace is slower yet the sensory reward is richer.”

The new logo represents the city’s main attraction: the Old Mission San Juan Bautista. The arched shape, which creates a frame for the typography, was inspired by a painted wall pattern from the interior of the Mission.

The illustrated typography is reminiscent of hand-painted signs from the past, while the bold clean strokes speak to the future with clarity and unflinching confidence.

These elements are a nod to both the historical context of San Juan Bautista and the independent residents, merchants, businesses and civic leaders who work to maintain the unique culture of San Juan Bautista.

Finished in a crisp turquoise color, the color of the mission doors, the logo is ready for use as the city embarks on a new effort to reach potential new business and tourism.

Incorporated in 1869, and known as "The City of History,” San Juan Bautista is a unique village, alive with early California history and home to one of the most authentic, picturesque and pristine missions along the California mission trail.

Old Mission San Juan Bautista was founded in 1797 by Father Fermin de Lausen, successor to Junipero Serra, and is the 15th of the 21 California Missions.

A deep commitment to preservation has endowed the city with historic authenticity, including a nationally registered historic district, a main street lined with buildings straight out of the old west and original adobes dating back two centuries.

By embracing multicultural performing arts and artists, festivals and street fairs the community celebrates entertainment year-round. Surrounded on all sides by untouched hillsides, organic fields and natural habitats, the call to nature and the rustic outdoors complements every experience.

The city's new marketing tagline, “Lift Your Spirit,” is intended to reflect the sentiments of both residents and visitors. There is a deep consensus on how nice it feels to visit a place where life slows down and people can enjoy a relaxed day of browsing in small shops and dining outdoors.

Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden Selected a Winner in the 37th Annual Telly Awards

The Telly Awards has named 20/20 Productions as a Bronze winner for Online Video as well as creator Otessa Ghadar for Directing in the 37th Annual Telly Awards for their piece titled “Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden”.

Washington, DC, May 05, 2016 - The Telly Awards has named 20/20 Productions as a Bronze winner for Online Video as well as creator Otessa Ghadar for Directing in the 37th Annual Telly Awards for their piece titled “Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden”. With over 13,000 entries from all 50 states and numerous countries, this is truly an honor.

Orange Juice in Bishop's Garden details the lives of a group of teenagers navigating high school and growing up in Washington, DC during the 1990's. It's all about teen magic - creating new and marvelous mischief with best friends, listening to mix-tapes, reading Sassy magazines, missing the last Metro, and getting stuck miles from payphones. Accompany the young heroine, Sarah, as she gets herself into idle summer misbehavior, love triangle betrayals, and friendship fallouts. Orange Juice in Bishop's Garden is a story about what her life is like before school is truly over, when she knows it's all going to change for good. It's about friends she'll never forget, first mistakes, and childish dreams not yet polluted by reality. She and her friends will engage in typical teen idolatry of hot musicians and renegades. They'll set each other up and tear each other down. They'll crash house parties and realize that sometimes in life, ther e are no 'do-overs.' They'll steal cars, candies, and hearts - they'll make you wish you were a teen again. All the teens will have their unique drama - whether with failed exemplary parents, clumsy self-discovery, or glorious heartbreak - and they will cling to their friendships to get through it all. They'll find relief through raves, secrecy, and rebellion. Careless and carefree, they are timeless teenage renegades, searching for meaning and identity.

The Telly Awards was founded in 1979 and is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and online commercials, video and films. Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world.

For its 37th season, The Telly Awards will once again give the public the power to view and rate videos submitted as part of the People’s Telly Awards. In addition to recognition from the Silver Telly Council, the judging panel that selects the Telly Awards winners, the Internet community helps decide the People’s Telly Awards winners.

A prestigious judging panel of over 500 accomplished industry professionals, each a past winner of a Silver Telly and a member of The Silver Telly Council, judged the competition, upholding the historical standard of excellence that Telly represents. The Silver Council evaluated entries to recognize distinction in creative work – entries do not compete against each other – rather entries are judged against a high standard of merit. Less than 10% of entries are chosen as Winners of the Silver Telly, our highest honor. Approximately 25% of entries are chosen as Winners of the Bronze Telly.

“The Telly Awards has a mission to honor the very best in film and video,” said Linda Day, Executive Director of the Telly Awards. 20/20 Productions’ accomplishment illustrates their creativity, skill, and dedication to their craft and serves as a testament to great film and video production.”

When asked about this prestigious achievement, 20/20 Productions creator and director Otessa Ghadar says, “I'm delighted and honored to be recognized for my directing in the wild west of film... aka the web. It's great to have one's work recognized and in such good company and I look forward to the future and what's next."

Holman Ranch Vineyards & Winery Estate Wines and Jarman Wines announce Three New Releases

Holman Ranch Vineyards and Winery Estate Wines and Jarman Wines Announce new releases.

Carmel Valley, CA, May 05, 2016 - Holman Ranch Vineyards and Winery Estate Wines and Jarman Wines Announce new releases.

The estate wines of Holman Ranch include: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rosé of Pinot Noir. Holman Ranch’s 21 acres of vineyards lie between 950 and 1150 feet in elevation. The root stocks and soils are most important in producing excellent fruit from the vineyards.

The surrounding Santa Lucia Mountains are very important to Carmel Valley viticulture. The local hills hold back the marine layer and broad breezes, which is beneficial to producing consistently good fruit. Sedimentary soils, such as, chock rock and Carmel stone also play a major role in wine producing methods by providing good soil drainage. Holman Ranch “stresses the vines” of the fruit with emphasis on reproduction, which in turn, stops growth and ripens fruit. The valley configuration allows for fog in the morning but with it rapidly moving out as the air warms which is great for Pinot Noir grapes. The proximity to the ocean and the elevation are positive characteristics for the vines.

Holman Ranch’s vines are planted 15 degrees off due north which allows for all day sunlight on fruit zone and good protection from breeze. No chemical herbicides or pesticides are used on our fruit and we have received our sustainable and organic certification. Holman Ranch is also 100% estate vineyards and winery.

Holman Ranch’s wines are unfined and crafted to deliver the true varietal of the grape from harvest to table. Purity and passion are key ingredients in the wine-making process, and this is where Holman Ranch truly stands out.

Jarman’s terroir (a French word that speaks to a wine’s place of origin, its subtle nuances of traceable character, flavor, lineage and integrity) refers to a special place in Carmel Valley — and also to a special woman, family matriarch Jarman Fearing Lowder, who inspired a family to bottle the essence of a mother’s spirit. The Jarman label reflects quality, with only the best local grapes used during an artisanal, small-batch winemaking process. Jarman wine uses only 100% estate-grown, organic and certified-sustainable grapes. Aged in French oak barrels, Jarman’s vintages are held in limited supply, and are not available anywhere outside their tasting room.

Wine Caves:
The winery at Holman Ranch, located in The Caves, is completely underground in order to take advantage of the natural cooling and humidity held below. The 3000 square foot area maintains a constant temperature of 58˚F-60 ˚F and contains four 750 gallon tanks, four 1200 gallon tanks, and four open top tanks that can hold two tons each. One hundred (100) French oak barrels are maintained year round. Winery operations such as destemming, pressing, fermenting and aging take place within the cool environment of The Caves, while bottling is done directly outside using a mobile bottling line. During harvest, 6 to 8 tons of grapes a day are processed. This may seem low but it is due to the fact that harvesting hours are between 7am to noon on any given day. Grapes are hand picked and loaded into half ton bins, transferred to the winery by tractor and then moved by forklift to the destemmer. White wines take around three weeks to ferment at 50˚F and are bottled in February, while red varietals ferment for two weeks and are bottled in early June. All skins, seeds and stems are composted and returned to the fields. Slow months for our winery are June, July and August with the busiest time being September. The winery will produce 3000-5000 cases annually.

Vineyard & Winery Background:
Located at the north eastern tip of the Carmel Valley Appellation, the family-owned Holman Ranch resides approximately 12 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. Immersed in history and romance, the ranch has not only proven to be an excellent growing location for our vineyards but also for the Tuscan varietal olive trees which have flourished under the temperate climate.

• Our estate-grown wine varietals are planted on approximately 21 acres of undulating terrain.
• The wines produced are unfined and crafted to deliver the true varietal of the grape from harvest to bottle.
• The climate and terroir of the appellation has played a critical part in the success of our wines. The warmth of our inland valley coupled with the cooling marine layer has established itself as an ideal microclimate for the production of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Our Burgundy Clones have thrived from the perfect blend of ideal climate, southern exposure and thin rocky soils.

Holman Ranch Tasting Room:
Holman Ranch’s Carmel Valley tasting room offers the perfect backdrop to swirl, sip and savor the different complexities of Holman Ranch Vineyard and Winery wines. There is something for everyone (4 varietals in fact), from the full-bodied Pinot Noirs to the light, fruity flavors of our Pinot Gris and lightly oaked Chardonnay. Holman Ranch also offers estate grown and bottled Olive Oil available for tasting and purchase at the Tasting Room.

The Tasting Room showcases the estate wines of Holman Ranch which includes our Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rosé of Pinot Noir. Carefully hand-harvested, cold pressed and bottled, the Extra Virgin Olive Oil produced from the fruits of our Tuscan trees has a delightful spice followed by a buttery finish.

Three tasting flights of three wines each (White, Mountain and Pinot Noir) are available 7 days a week. The Tasting Room also holds a series of cooking demos called In Your Backyard. For more information, call (831) 659-2640.

Olive Grove:
Holman Ranch has its own distinctive olive grove located on a south facing hill of our vineyard. The grove is comprised of 100 trees with multiple cultivars planted. These cultivars consist of 25 Frantoio, 25 Leccino, 10 Mission, 25 Coratina, 5 Pendolino, and 10 Picholine, all of which were originally planted in 2194 in a Carmel Valley orchard then replanted at Holman Ranch in 2007. These mature olive trees allowed us to produce olive oil right away. They are planted in shale for the best production and harvesting results possible. We harvest our fruit by hand in December, which is then milled, producing a superb, high quality product. Although the Olive Grove is not certified organic, we do employ organic practices when farming our trees. Our mill, however, is certified organic. An interesting fact is that olive trees are alternate bearing, which means that one year they may produce 650, 375ml bottles worth of oil, while next year they may produce only 50, 375ml bottles.

Holman Ranch Background:
Holman Ranch: Where the Past is Always Present. Tucked away in the rolling hills of Carmel Valley, Californian historic Holman Ranch provides a unique and memorable setting for weddings, special events, family gatherings, corporate retreats, and team-building events. With its charming gardens, stunning mountain views and serenity, this private estate affords old-world charm while providing modern day conveniences. This stunning Property includes a fully restored stone hacienda, overnight guest rooms, vineyards, olive grove, horse stables and more. www.holmanranch.com

About Jarman Wines:

The two varietals include:
The 2013 Jarman Pinot Noir takes on nuances of warm blueberry pie, cloves and cinnamon that mingle in the nose with oak notes from 10 months in the barrel. The mouth-feel is plump and juicy with overtones of cassis and blackberries.

The 2014 Jarman Chardonnay features floral notes reminiscent of walking by a parfumerie in France — subtle and pleasant with a hint of earthiness. When serving this wine lightly chilled, rich notes of underripe berries and raw honey will waltz across your palate.

To further honor their mother’s memory, the family has opened a special tasting room in Carmel Valley Village (open noon to 5 p.m., Thurs.-Sun.; or by appointment) next to Will’s Fargo Steakhouse + Bar, the restaurant they purchased in 2014. The tastings will feature full-fledged experiences, including tours and wine education, and each will include a food element that complements the wine. The new Jarman tasting room will provide visitors with three unique experiences: Cru Tasting, Premier Cru Experience and the Grand Cru Experience.
