Shopping secret: Goodwill Central Coast supplements secondhand items with new, name-brand treasures

While Goodwill Central Coast appreciates all donations that support its quest to create jobs in the community, certain unmentionables never make it to the secondhand racks.

Salinas, CA, April 25, 2021 - While Goodwill Central Coast appreciates all donations that support its quest to create jobs in the community, certain unmentionables never make it to the secondhand racks.

That’s why the nonprofit leverages its considerable buying power to stock shelves with new goods straight from mainstream stores and manufacturers.

Those on the hunt for underwear, socks, belts, sheets, toothbrushes, shoelaces, and a variety of household items, will find name brands at a fraction of prices seen at other retailers.

“There are some items that just don’t make sense secondhand, so what we do is supplement our stock of donated items with new items, we classify them as “New Goods” said Alan Martinson, vice president of retail for Goodwill Central Coast, which serves Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties. “We do our best to keep prices low and affordable.”

Martinson said the combination of all the donated treasures and new packaged products in Goodwill stores really creates a sense of excitement.

“For many people, finding a pack of socks for $5.99 or a new belt for $6.49 is a great deal,” he said. “Every day a truck arrives at each store with hundreds of the latest donated and new items, and it takes away all the items that haven’t sold. There’s something different every day, and the bargains are extraordinary.”

“For Back to Class, parents find this particularly exciting,” said Martinson. “These are items that add up fast when paying full price. You can reduce the amount you spend by combining donated and new items while shopping.  With brand names such as Gold Medal, Gold Toe, Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, Anne Klein, Juicy Couture, Dockers, Esprit, Danskin, Cherokee and more, Goodwill Central Coast provides a well-rounded shopping experience — for less.

“There’s no reason you can’t dress someone, head to toe, for $30 or $40,” he said.

Once you’ve found the perfect wardrobe, customers love sifting through the front-of-the-store racks to score new $5 sunglasses, $5 packs of batteries, pet treats, leashes, first-aid kits and much more.

Now offering expanded hours (9 a.m.-7 p.m.), Goodwill Central Coast stores create the all-day joy of the hunt for both used and new items.

With an inventory that’s updated daily, the retail stores are a treasure trove for thrifty bargain hunters. Best of all, by shopping at Goodwill, customers support job training and employment programs that help friends and neighbors find jobs and pathways to independence.

Goodwill Central Coast expands e-commerce workforce, moves into larger facility in Salinas

In July of 2017, Goodwill Central Coast opened its centralized e-commerce facility on Moffett Street in Salinas.

Salinas, CA, March 04, 2021 — In July of 2017, Goodwill Central Coast opened its centralized e-commerce facility on Moffett Street in Salinas. In less than four years, the tri-county nonprofit’s online sector has grown from five employees to 26.

These jobs involve varied work in photography, jewelry authentication, distribution/transportation, technology and management. And it’s not just the workforce that has expanded. The division has moved from its 11,000-square-foot facility to a new home with more than 18,000 square feet. This includes a state-of-the-art distribution center, new photography studio and a spacious new jewelry center.

What’s more, its listing capacity has increased dramatically, as it currently adds nearly 1,000 new items online for donors and customers per day. Each day this team of specialists sorts through thousands of goods in an effort to gather and document coveted items to put up for sale at Shopgoodwill.com, Ebay.com and amazon.com.

From a leadership standpoint, Goodwill Central Coast has appointed Amber Vick as Regional Director of Stores and E-commerce. Vick previously oversaw the retail store locations in Monterey and Santa Cruz. Vick joins the current e-commerce management team of Patrick Sagara (e-commerce manager), Dawn Lockwood and Jorge Huerta-Becerra (both assistant managers).

“Together the updated management team brings a wealth of training, knowledge and experience to Goodwill Central Coast,” said Alan Martinson, vice president of retail. “This team is focused on career growth of their staff, and this is where we see the biggest benefits long term.”

The expansion is aligned with Goodwill Central Coast’s mission to invest in technology and infrastructure to help create jobs of the future.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, retail e-commerce across the country reached $211.5 billion in the second quarter of 2020, up 31.8 percent from the first quarter, and 44.5 percent year-over-year. E-commerce also accounted for 16.1 percent of total retail sales in the second quarter, up from 11.8 percent in the first quarter.

While much of this growth can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, the future of e-commerce is one of strong, steady growth.

Goodwill Central Coast is focused on our mission of creating jobs and removing barriers to employment,” Martinson said. “The GCC e-commerce division is a shining star in the nonprofit world, providing opportunity to learn skills in the technology job segment and provide growth for those who would like to learn.”

GCC’s Information Technology department has deployed the latest advancements to enhance operations. This not only makes Goodwill Central Coast more efficient, it provides vast training for individuals with the desire to learn about e-commerce, and the opportunities within the industry.

“Yes, it helps support GCC by shopping online or in our store locations, however it is the generous donations from our community that make it possible,” Martinson said.

GCC’s online items represent a treasure trove of items that were generously donated to support programs. The e-commerce team has developed a short list of items to donate that help the most: jewelry, musical instruments, electronics, artwork, trading or game cards, video games and systems.

“Items are usually in good condition,” Martinson said. “These items are carefully expedited and auctioned off to the highest bidder. We appreciate all donations and continued support of our job programs.”

Goodwill designed its virtual marketplace to provide an engaging online shopping destination. Consumers enjoy what Martinson likes to call “guilt-free retail therapy,” knowing every purchase supports job training programs and promotes reuse, keeping items out of landfills and reducing the need for scarce natural resources.

The Salinas team ships hundreds of items each day, from gold jewelry to clothing, musical instruments and more. The engaging site showcases new items and items leaving the gallery, it tracks a Hot 50, entices buyers with coupon codes and offers shipping deals as low as 1 cent. GCC has also resumed some customer pick-ups of online orders (with restrictions) at the facility, 1566 Moffett St., Salinas.

Nationwide, Goodwill has generated more than $560 million in online sales since launching the site in 1999. Goodwill Central Coast’s e-commerce division sees roughly $2 million in annual revenue, but Martinson expects that to grow significantly next year. While the average price of an item in Goodwill’s brick-and-mortar stores is between $4-$5, the online platform sells items averaging in value between $30 and $40.

All this added revenue helps fund a growing number of programs that have served tens of thousands of individuals facing barriers to employment.

Goodwill Central Coast Continues Philanthropic ways by Supporting causes of other Local Nonprofits

It’s a well-known fact that Goodwill Central Coast helps anyone who needs or wants a job — be it a veteran, high school dropout or someone with a physical disability.

Salinas, CA, December 04, 2020 - What’s lesser known is the length Goodwill goes to create opportunities for nonprofit organizations that have similar outreach in the community.

For example, Goodwill Central Coast recently joined forces with Interim Inc., and Coastal Roots Hospitality to coordinate the delivery of 350 Thanksgiving meals, warm socks and more to Interim residents, clients and others in need in the community.

Goodwill will continue its support throughout the holiday season as Interim plans to coordinate two gift giveaways. One involves approximately 500 pairs of new socks donated by Goodwill Central Coast that will be paired with $15 gift certificates from Interim, which provide services and affordable housing supporting members of our community with mental illness in building productive and satisfying lives.

In October, Goodwill Central Coast collaborated on the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer Fundraiser for the second straight year. Through Round Up donations, customers gave $950 to the cause, and Goodwill matched those donations to increase the total to $1,900.

In November, Goodwill Central Coast collaborated with customers through an in-store donation drive to raise funds for The ALS Association Golden West Chapter.

Goodwill CC matched each donation dollar for dollar to aid the nonprofit provide daily assistance to those living with the challenges of ALS.

Following devastating fires in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, Goodwill Central Coast rallied with its shoppers to raise thousands of dollars (including nearly $1,400 at the Scotts Valley store alone).

Additionally, Goodwill Central Coast stores in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties aided wildfire victims by donating all funds from its Round-Up Program in September and October to those who lost their homes and were forced to evacuate, totalling nearly $8,000.

Goodwill’s popular Round Up program is a way for shoppers to help enhance Goodwill’s mission of providing job training and career services that help individuals with special needs get to work. Shoppers can either “round up” their purchase to the nearest dollar or donate a set amount ($1, $3 or $5). All of these options are displayed on the credit card terminal machine.

At Goodwill CC, revenue generated by its retail stores directly funds our high caliber job training programs. In-store change helps Goodwill change the lives of local residents for the better by providing them with the job training needed to become employed.

Funds will go to nonprofits and organizations assisting individuals and families with emergency assistance, health and human services, short-term housing/rental assistance, reimbursement of equipment and supplies and other support for affected residents. The fund is a trusted repository for philanthropic assets to be directed specifically for this purpose.

Goodwill Central Coast Shares tips on How to shop Safely and Happily throughout the Pandemic

The year 2020 has brought unforeseeable changes as a global virus dramatically altered the way we all live.

Salinas, CA, July 20, 2020 - The year 2020 has brought unforeseeable changes as a global virus dramatically altered the way we all live. But through it all we have found solace in ordinary activities that provide a sense of comfort.

Those activities include shopping — and helping a community thrive by supporting the ongoing mission of Goodwill Central Coast. Safely and patiently shopping at your local Goodwill store helps job seekers get back to work and reclaim financial and personal independence.

And in the process shoppers can dive into a treasure trove of items — all at bargain prices. Goodwill has found that donations have increased dramatically since the pandemic began, as the community has looked to effectively downsize and declutter.

Shoppers at Goodwill Central Coast stores may notice some changes made as part of important safety measures. Face masks are required, of course, and shoppers should follow social distancing guidelines.

Goodwill will limit the number of shoppers at one time, so a queue will often form outside each store. Goodwill urges shoppers to show patience — and will reward a lucky few who maintain composure in support of this policy.

When it comes to shopping, how do bargain hunters find new treasures and still stay safe? Goodwill Central Coast offers the following tips:

Seniors, students and members of the military receive 10 percent off purchases when shopping Monday through Wednesday.
The slowest time of the day is normally after lunchtime until Goodwill stores close (check www.ccgoodwill.org as hours frequently change due to COVID-19).
Follow the markers on the floor designed to improve traffic flow and create social distancing.
Shop in zones (Goodwill stores have separated housewares and clothing, for example).
For those who remain uncomfortable shopping in person, Goodwill reminds them to shop on the nonprofit’s e-commerce site at www.shopgoodwill.com. More than 130 Goodwill organizations from across the country list and auction unique items on the site. Each day the Salinas e-commerce team alone ships 400 to 500 items, from gold jewelry to clothing, musical instruments and more.

Through this avenue, shoppers can enjoy what Goodwill calls “guilt-free retail therapy,” knowing every purchase supports job training programs and promotes reuse, keeping items out of landfills and reducing the need for scarce natural resources.

Goodwill Central Coast’s e-Commerce Team Back in Action and Shipping New Items Daily While Feeding Into Nonprofit’s Mission Of Creating Jobs

Once again, there’s a buzz of activity on the top floor of the Goodwill Central Coast headquarters on Moffett Street in Salinas as Goodwill’s ecommerce team opens up operations again, listing and shipping new items daily.

Salinas, CA, May 22, 2020 — Once again, there’s a buzz of activity on the top floor of the Goodwill Central Coast headquarters on Moffett Street in Salinas as Goodwill’s ecommerce team opens up operations again, listing and shipping new items daily.

Monterey County officials gave Goodwill formal permission to open again on April 30, and, on May 4, the operation began with a manager, assistant manager and four department heads. Three days later, 12 other full-time associates who had been furloughed were recalled.

“We are working on new enhancements in our ecommerce operations daily and expect a larger and more convenient process for our customers soon,” said Alan C. Martinson, Goodwill Central Coast vice president of retail.

The e-commerce team sorts through the most coveted donated items to put up for sale at shopgoodwill.com. The website, which opened in July 2017, represents the first e-commerce auction platform created, owned and operated by a nonprofit. Goodwill designed the virtual marketplace to provide an engaging online shopping destination that would further the Goodwill mission.

“It fits our mission, reinvesting in jobs,” said Martinson. “It’s effectively a job creator within a job creator.”

Shoppers enjoy what Goodwill calls “guilt-free retail therapy,” knowing every purchase supports job training programs and promotes reuse, keeping items out of landfills and reducing the need for scarce natural resources.

Martinson hand-picked the team, store associates with experience and a sharp eye who could cull specialty items from the tons of donations, separate them, tag them, photograph them, process them, upload them, and ship them — all in one facility.

The Salinas team shipped 400 to 500 items each day, from gold jewelry to clothing, musical instruments and more, before the pandemic forced operations to close. At its height, jewelry and books were the biggest sellers on the site.

Shopping at Goodwill Central Coast Stores Provides Thrifty, Stress-free Options for Thanksgiving decor

We all know the purpose behind Thanksgiving is to spend time with loved ones — not to stress over holiday entertaining and tablescapes.

Salinas, CA, October 28, 2019 - Goodwill Central Coast would like to remind the community how easy it is to turn donated, marked-down items into the perfect party with eye-popping, fall-themed decor. Shopping at Goodwill can alleviate both stress and the annual strain felt on pocketbooks.

Savvy Goodwill shoppers have always found it exciting to see what’s new, and what’s possible to make out of items donated by others. It’s the epitome of responsible upcycling since money through the sale of donated goods helps support and grow Goodwill’s critical community-based programs and services. The bottom line? The environmental and social impacts cannot be denied.

Turn baskets into cornucopia-style table centerpieces, use natural candles to add warmth, elevate artificial flowers with a quick spray-painting, or stock up on critical kitchen tools and accessories.

The possibilities are endless when shopping at Goodwill Central Coast stores. And all the bits and pieces shoppers buy help strengthen their own communities.

Goodwill Central Coast Stores to Match Donations during Cookies for Kids’ Cancer Campaign

What if the cookie was not only delicious but part of a sweet fundraising campaign that aims to make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer?

Salinas, CA, October 08, 2019 - How much would you pay for a cookie? What if the cookie was not only delicious but part of a sweet fundraising campaign that aims to make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer?

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, all Goodwill Central Coast stores will be offering delicious treats from Pacific Cookie Company — with all proceeds supporting Cookies for Kids' Cancer. You can choose your donation amount for a cookie, and Goodwill will match it!

Tragically, cancer is the No. 1 cause of death in children by disease in the United States. There are 40,000 U.S. children actively battling cancer right now. With less than 4 percent of the National Cancer Institute's budget going to all childhood cancers combined, donations are critical in making a difference for these kids.

Goodwill Central Coast inspires Halloween costume seekers with ‘Addams Family’ theme

Goodwill Central Coast, for decades a local treasure trove for Halloween costume inspiration, has announced a special finger-snapping theme for the year’s spookiest day.

Salinas, CA, September 09, 2019 - Goodwill Central Coast, for decades a local treasure trove for Halloween costume inspiration, has announced a special finger-snapping theme for the year’s spookiest day.

Goodwill brings back the silly vibe of “The Addams Family,” the beloved American horror and black comedy sitcom from the 1960s. Featuring a theme song punctuated by finger snaps, “The Addams Family” brought to life a hilarious cast of misfits, including husband-and-wife Gomez and Morticia, their butler Lurch and even a disembodied hand called Thing.

Each year finding the right costume at a price that is not downright scary can prove to be a daunting task. Not at Goodwill Central Coast, with 16 outlets to help provide DIY inspiration — from Uncle Fester to Cousin Itt.

And don’t forget your pets. Find inspiration in the curious lineup of “Addams Family” household animals, including Kitty Kat the lion, Aristotle the octopus, Zelda the vulture, Isolde the piranha, and Lucifer the lizard.

Goodwill invites everyone to support their community by shopping at a Goodwill store, or by simply donating gently-used clothing and household items. Each donation helps Goodwill’s cause to help empower people to work and setting them on a path to financial independence. Donations also help preserve the Central Coast landscape by diverting millions of pounds from landfills.

From home pick-ups to potential tax write offs, Goodwill makes donating as easy as possible. Find out more at www.ccgoodwill.org.

Shopping at Goodwill Central Coast stores is a win-win for your Pocketbook and the Planet

The sale of secondhand goods — often called recommerce — is the fastest growing retail sector in the country.

Salinas, CA, August 28, 2019 - The sale of secondhand goods — often called recommerce — is the fastest growing retail sector in the country. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, GlobalData PLC estimates that secondhand sales will double to $51 billion by 2023, up from $24 billion last year.

The well-stocked stores of Goodwill Central Coast are a big part of this trend, featuring the same name brands offered at department stores — at a fraction of the price.

Shoppers ages 18 to 37 (a large majority of them women) are driving this shift, inspired by everyday low prices, the high quality of items and the eco-friendly benefits of shopping secondhand.

Studies show that consumers, on average, buy 60 percent more clothing than they did 15 years ago, but keep the items only half as long. This has resulted in more waste, and an increase in greenhouse gases due to the energy and resources it takes to produce all that clothing.

Goodwill Central Coast shoppers can enjoy guilt-free retail therapy, knowing every purchase supports job training programs and promotes reuse, keeping useful items out of our landfills and reducing the need for scarce natural resources.

Stores throughout Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties offer unique finds at unbeatable prices — from that perfect vintage jacket to a pair of name-brand shoes. You never know what treasure you might find.

Looking for the very best deals? Check out our daily 50 percent off color tag sales to find huge savings on quality items. Shop in your neighborhood, or online, as the Goodwill virtual store can lead you to that perfect item without leaving your home.

About Goodwill
Goodwill Central Coast builds lives, families and communities by helping people with employment needs become successful, supported by innovative enterprises that preserve the Earth’s resources.

Each year Goodwill assists more than 10,150 job seekers get back to work and reclaim financial and personal independence. It provides a positive learning environment that creates brighter futures through connecting people to meaningful work. For more information visit www.ccgoodwill.org.

Goodwill Central Coast Launches ‘Where Is Koko?’ Campaign; Spot Koko in a Goodwill Store, Win a Prize

Goodwill Goes to The Dogs This Halloween with Who Wore it Best Dog Costume Contest Launching Oct. 14, 2019

Salinas, CA, August 13, 2019 — Goodwill Central Coast goes to the dogs this fall with its “Where is Koko?” campaign and during Halloween, with its Who Wore it Best Dog Costume Contest.

Salinas rescue dog Koko is Goodwill Central Coast’s pet ambassador and she will pop up from time to time at any one of the 15 Goodwill stores on the Central Coast. Spot Koko (or at least a lifesize cutout of her!), notify the manager and the spotter wins a $5 PAWESOME buck to use at Goodwill. Koko will also pop up on Goodwill Central Coast social media. The first person to name the location of the Goodwill store she is at receives a $5 PAWESOME buck to shop. Be sure to follow Goodwill Central Coast on Facebook and Instagram.

The “Where is Koko?” campaign launches Tuesday, Aug. 20, and runs through Dec. 31, 2019.

Goodwill loves Halloween and with that in mind is hosting a Who Wore It Best Dog Costume Contest from Oct. 14 – Nov. 2. Enter your DIY costume by 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 2, on our social media sites for a chance at awesome grand prizes, as well as two weeks of daily giveaways on Goodwill’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

Vote on what dog you think wore their costume best on social media, and you could help them win Goodwill bucks just for voting and the winner of the contest will receive a $100 gift certificate to Goodwill and a one-night stay in a dog-friendly room at the Hofsas House Hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea (holidays do not apply, subject to availability) and a $100 gift certificate to Tarpy’s Roadhouse to enjoy Sunday brunch, lunch or dinner on their dog-friendly patio. Use the hashtag #GoodwillHLWN.

Goodwill encourages people to upcycle from Goodwill and use the items found at Goodwill to create Halloween costumes both for themselves and their four-legged companions.

Upcycle For Your Four-Legged Friends!
Since pets are members of the family, too, it only makes sense that we want to pour as much effort into their needs as we do into our own. That means that we’re often tempted to customize their accessories to suit their furry little personalities. So, here are some drool-worthy doggy decor and dressings made from Goodwill finds!

Do you have some old sweaters that are sitting in your wardrobe for a long time, either because they are out of fashion or don’t fit anymore? If they are still in good conditions, why not upcycle them into something useful?

Big ugly dog beds can be such an eyesore, but owners often cringe to think that their darlings have to curl up on the hard floor. What’s a person to do? Well, make a place for Rover to sleep that looks as cute as it does cozy.

For inspiration, check out this round-up put together by blogger Landeelu: https://www.landeeseelandeedo.com/creative-diy-dog-beds/.

Also, look for colorful Goodwill sweaters for this project at www.goodwillvalleys.com/shop/.

There are plenty of options for dog collars out there, but they all mostly follow the same bland design — nylon webbing with a plastic buckle. If the color and pattern variation of that sort of collar have never been stylish enough for your best friend, why not dress up their dog tags with a fancy DIY collar?

Make your mutt his or her own quirky collar by shopping the kids’ section of Goodwill in search of a button-down shirt in a pattern you like. Snip out the collar of the shirt, attach tags, and button it around your pup’s neck!

Some ideas for your dog collar: https://cheerfultimesblog.com/2015/03/15/crafts-diy-dog-dress-shirt-collar/?platform=hootsuite

Doggy decor is a fun way to capture our love of our best friends within the context of our homes. As you browse Goodwill’s shelves on your next visit, keep a look out for figurines of your favorite breed. And don’t let a terrible paint job stop you! Thrifted finds can be quickly covered up with a fresh color for customized decor.

While you shop for project supplies, don’t forget that your support helps Goodwill organizations change lives by training unemployed or underemployed people for careers in fields such as automotive services, construction, health care, information technology, manufacturing, hospitality and retail as well as in other high-demand industries. So, have fun with your dog-themed DIYs as you and your pup benefit your local community.
